Contains letters to Rimmer from Stephen Higginson Perkins, his friend and patron, concerning sculpture and contemporary art; contains also many pencil drawings and drypoint prints by Rimmer, and related items. There are related bound manuscripts in this collection which include drawings, such as those from art lectures at the Lowell Institute, Boston; sketchbook; album of poems, notes and sketches; narrative poem; and scrapbook with clippings and articles.

Rimmer was a sculptor, portrait and figure painter, teacher, and writer on art. He taught art, especially art anatomy, at Cooper Union in New York and the Museum School in Boston. He was also a doctor, largely self-educated, and he practiced from 1855 to 1863 in Chelsea and East Milton, Mass.
